Lark is despondent, because she realizes killers are still after her.
Lark asks Brenar to teach her to fight.
Brenar says no.
"If I teach you to fight, it'll make my job harder."

Brenar takes them to a new town, where he knows a sorcerer who might be able to help them figure out what's going on.
As a price for the sorcerer's help, Brenar has to fight a duel.
